Shari's Introduction

Happy New Year!

The start of the New Year and in this case a new decade seems like the perfect time to turn a new page in your life, which is why so many people make New Year's resolutions.

Did you know that approximately 50% of the population makes resolutions each New Year? Among the top resolutions are weight loss, exercise, stopping smoking, better money management and debt reduction.

I have sure seen a lot of resolution advice in the financial world out there - such as:

  • Get organized
  • set your short, medium and long term financial goals
  • budget
  • pay yourself first
  • establish an emergency fund
  • review your investments
  • plan for your retirement
  • prepare your estate plan
  • know what you want
  • prioritize your debts
  • use credit cards less
  • make more money and pay down debt
  •  put more money towards RRSP's and TFSA's
  •  get your your taxes done early
  •  give money
  • read a financial book every month.
And this last one that I read was quite shocking to me -
"Tune out emotions, don't get attached to anything you own
and admit when you've made a mistake."

There is a lot of advice out there when it comes to anything to do with your financial health. Some good and some not so much...

debtAccording to Statistics Canada, the Canadian household debt-to-income ratio has risen to a record 145 per cent. In other words, for every $100 in income, Canadians carry $145 in debt.

No wonder the books on 'getting out of debt' are flying off the shelves!

Regardless of where you are financially - there is probably something you would like to change about your relationship to money.

Are you struggling with the basics of financial management? Are your bank balances or your assets not anywhere they should be based on what you have earned so far...? Or are you paralyzed with indecision anytime you go to make a financial decision?

Well I am here to tell you that you are not alone!

I have dedicated this issue to talking to you about money and to let you in on a secret.... that it really is not about the money....!

My wish for you is a prosperous - healthy - happy year!

Read on to find some money answers ...

Your Relationship with Money!

money problems

When it comes to money, have you ever experienced one or more of these:

  • * feelings of anxiety and fear?

  •
  • * a sense that money is independent from the more revered or spiritual side of your life?

  •
  • * endless wants, or the feeling that you will never have enough money to be happy?

  •
  • * frustration with your spouse or family member regarding their spending habits?

  •
  • * or believe that your finances are beyond your control?

Money symbolThere is no denying that it is easier to be rich than poor, but without exception it makes little difference what your outer life circumstances are - everyone struggles with some aspect of their relationship to money. The darkest emotions stirred up by money often have nothing to do with your intent for security... people can live on $20k year and have no fear - and others can have millions and worry...

For many of us - no matter which generation we came from or what we believe about money - rich or poor - there can never

be enough. We crave more money - material possessions - or investment success even when our financial needs don't

warrant it. We might know that we are caught up in our desire but feel powerless to do anything about it.

adding up billsMany people find themselves in a pattern of money regardless of whose advice they follow or how much time goes by.

Old habits die hard, and the person who feels poor and makes decisions from a penny pinching mindset remains thrifty to the point of denial, because it's not about the money.

The message that society tells us is that it is about the money - the more you have then the more it will bring you the freedom to stop worrying and enjoy life.

If that were so... then why do so many people remain stuck in

the same financial mess - even though they have tried

everything they know to get ahead?

I believe that the number one reason people are not

happy is because the traditional ways that they have been

taught to deal with money ... just don't work!

We are told to spend less - save more - think positive

thoughts and that will create the abundance that you want or find the perfect career. We set goals - create budgets put all

the insurance in place - write wills and invest in a certain way. These are all important but they are not enough ... Why not?

The reason - they approach the money problem from the outside in - rather than the inside out.

Whether you are a saver, spender or give it all away, you will repeat your ineffective behaviour patterns with money

because you are comfortable to specific states of being, where money is concerned.

You are used to a certain level of anxiety or calm - craving or avoidance - security or abundance. No matter what changes occur in your outer circumstances, the unconscious mind, if it remains unexamined - untrained and unconnected to your

spirit, it will create those old familiar circumstances in your financial life.

bills

This is the reason you see people

who win the lottery and then end up

in the same financial condition they

were in prior to their winnings.

Their unconscious mind was so determined to make it that

they literally could not cope with the wealth and freedom that was driven upon them, so their unconscious mind manifested

the old familiar financial conditions in their outer lives again.

This does not mean to say that you cannot be wealthy and happy at the same time, but the path to freedom requires that you focus more on your inner life than on your outer financial circumstances.

It may seem easy for me to tell you that you should go inward

to get the answers, but I see this everyday and there are tried and true strategies that can be used to help you.

I see clients, friends and family who are stuck and do not know how to change. The more I see, the more I know that I have to look at a new way to help them.

The conventional financial planning tools were not enough!

There are many programs out there - books - CD's and you

may have read many that tell you how to be a millionaire by investing in real estate - giving up your daily latte or others

that tell you to visualize abundance or even play the stock market more effectively. Many train you to think like a millionaire or embrace a simpler life so you can get out of the rat race.

Depending on your personal preferences any of these approaches may be right yet most of them offer external solutions to a problem where the real answers lie within.

Try this little exercise ...

What are you feeling about money right now?

Which of the following words express your frame of mind?

(Or you can add your own words...)

concern / panic / self-indulgence / dread / hope / fear

satisfaction / contentment / boredom / anger / doom and gloom / frustrated / excitement / impartial / pleasure / peace

disorder / desire  / adequate / tranquility / overwhelm

Observe these feelings as if they were a weather system - separate them from yourself. Is it rainy, cloudy or sunny when it comes to your feelings about money?

Observing without judgment and without forcing change is the foundation for the major shifts that you have to make with

your relationship to money. You are where you are based on what you have done so far and I say - so what! The past does not equal the future.

I believe that you need to increase your inner wealth by experiencing freedom from the feeling of never having enough.

You need to learn to have a sense of financial choice instead

of limitation. You must enjoy a sensation of abundance that inspires you to use money for the greater good, and to have

the knowledge that we are all connected.

Outer wealth rarely leads to inner wealth - however I know

that inner wealth often does lead to outer wealth. You need to look honestly into your own mind and heart and see what you already think you know about money and happiness.

By looking into your relationship with money you will gain an enduring sense of financial success. This will give you a clear understanding of the powerful forces that have shaped your financial life, a real sense of security and confidence about

your future with improved financial relationships with your  partner, kids and even your parents. This will give you a

greater ability to reach your most important financial goals.

In fact, this is exactly why I created the Money Momentum 2 day Workshop! - to help women discover what their relationship is to money and how their beliefs may be holding them back from getting what they really want.

I have lived through my own transformation in the last 10 years. It is my passion and goal to help other women who are in the same place that I was. I'm here to tell you, you can make amazing changes, with the right help!

90% of all women have sole responsibility for their finances within their lifetime, yet 79% of all women have not planned for this.

Don't let this be you.
