Living too long is the biggest financial risk of all. Medical advances and research today is helping people live longer - intensifying the need for planning. Did you know that 75% of women are divorced or widowed when they die. More times than not the husband gets sick - drains their bank account and then there is nothing left. I know this happens because it happened to my grandparents. My grandmother is now living with my parents and the burden is huge on them. Planning gives you choices. Are you a daughter burdened with fears and frustrations concerning your elder parents? Do you have siblings who may not be co-operative?

There is help - Charles Hill owner of Paideia Consulting & Mediation has added elder mediation to his services.

By 2010 did you know that 60% of the boomers will be over age 50 with a surviving parent. This number will only get bigger every year with the aging boomer population.

Compare this to 1960 when there were only 16%.

This shift in our demographics is already having an impact on our health care systems.  The key is to be prepared. Sometimes family members cannot agree about the services that their parents should receive or for that matter even know what is available.

Elder mediation is there to use when a parent is struggling to have a voice in his/her care, and when adult children are in conflict over their parents finances.  Even if you do not have parents that do not need care now - this is good information to plan ahead before there is conflict.
